Business Plan

Business plan writing: an outline for your success!

A business plan is the foundation of your new company, so it's important to get it right the first time. One good way to do this is to understand the best format for a successful business plan. A few minutes' on the Internet will yield plenty of online resources for putting together a business plan. In fact, your difficulty will be in finding the right business plan consultant for the job!

Once you've done your planning, it's time to start writing your business plan. You'll find that your business plan document normally follows the same general format, with the following sections (not necessarily in this order):

  • Business Plan: Executive summary: Less than one page of summary. If you can't make sense of it in one page, then you may need to re-think your entire idea.
  • Description of the business: What you plan to do or sell, to whom, how, and where.
  • Business Plan: Customer strategy: How you will gain customers and keep them.
  • Financials: How you aim to finance the start of your enterprise.
  • Business Plan: Management: Who will be responsible for running the operation? What is their previous relevant experience?
  • Appendices: Supporting material, such as financial projections, resumes, detailed technical description of the product, etc.

Business plan outline: how to develop a business plan

The above business plan outline is a "bare bones" form of what will be a crucially important business document in the development of your new business. While part of a business plan can be written by anyone moderately knowledgeable in the area, there are some detailed questions that can only be covered by yourself, the business owner:

  • Business Plan: What and who is your competition for your business plan? Have you done any competitor business surveys?
  • Business Plan: What is the industry for your product or service at this particular time and in this particular place? Have you done any business validation testing for your plan?
  • What do you consider your unique selling point, which will differentiate you from the competition?
  • Business Plan: What do you consider will be your most effective business strategy? Have you done any interviews with other business customers?

If you can answer questions like these, then your business plan will be far more convincing to venture capitalists! Even more fundamentally, if you have a speedy answer to these questions, then the signs are good that your business idea has the potential to be successful. If you can't answer these questions so well, then maybe you need to re-think the whole idea.
